Among the numerous attractions to visit in northern Slovakia, the Spis Castle is a truly enchanting structure. Located just by the town of Spišské Podhradie, this vast castle has always attracted visitors.
There are regular buses from Poprad to Spišské Podhradie. As there were no electronic sign boards on the bus and also the driver never informed passengers about the stops, we requested a pretty local lady to let us know when we arrived at the stop and she agreed.
As we approached Spišské Podhradie, we realised that it was impossible to miss the place as the elegant structure of the Spis castle was visible from quite a few kilometres.
The town of Spišské Podhradie is mostly quiet with a simple main square and a decent tourist office. The distance from Spišské Podhradie to Spis castle is 4 kms via the main road, however, there is another way to the castle which reduces the distance by almost half and we chose to take this route.
The path to the castle is a bit steep and can be an exhausting walk in the middle of the day. However, it allows visitors to enjoy excellent views of the town and the entire region along with the hillocks and meadows.
Although the castle is officially a ruin, it has been maintained quite well by the authorities and there is even provisions for food and drinks right inside the castle premises.
The castle is an excellent example of medieval architecture and for a structure made in the 12-13th century, it is quite elegant as well.
Visitors are treated by wonderful panoramic views from the upper areas of the castle.
There is also a museum with items and relics from the past and also a chapel.
The walled areas of the castle can be explored on foot and there are even provisions to walk along the top of the wall. Lot of people also choose this location for wedding photo shoots and we were witness to one of them.
After exploring the entire castle, it was time for us to head back to the town.
We were treated to wonderful views of the meadows along with the golden light of the setting sun.
We had a last look of the castle and headed back towards the town of Spišské Podhradie.
One might not find the town very exciting but it has it’s charm. We even met a good number of people and kids who greeted us and we had a quite a good and amusing conversations.
Spis castle is definitely a place not to be missed when you’re in northern Slovakia. Hike, enjoy the nature and bask in medieval history when exploring this beautiful ruin of Spis Castle.
